There are a few bumps on the back doors where I reversed slowly into the bay window when someone had moved the block that goes behind the rear wheel. The left plastic trim that goes behind the sliding door got detached when I caught a rock on a tight left turn in Dartmoor. It is attached with cable ties currently. There are also a few bullet hole stickers. When paint got scratched, I sanded the area, painted with white hammerite & put the vinyl stickers over the top.
The Vehicle is a Renault Master LM39DCI minibus 2298cc Diesel registration YJ64 BXE. VIN: vf1men4ue51417089.
It has done approximately 70,000 miles. I bought it during Covid when it had done just 14000 miles. It was previously owned by Lex Leasing who rented it to National Trust to drive people around an estate. You can still see the National Trust emblem sticker that was on the front doors in some lights.
I have had it serviced every year by the mechanic who has looked after my vehicles since 2005. I generally have a trip away every month of a few hundred miles – the engine gets a good run as diesels should. I have all the MOT certificates & mileage information since I bought it. MOT runs out in March.
It had 17 seats originally & it was registered as being capable of carrying over 3500kgs. I had it downgraded to 3500kg weight limit & 8 seats by SVC who provide reports for DVLA & registered it as such as my driving licence only lets me go up to 3500kg & 9 seats. Nothing was changed with the springs etc so if it had to be re upgraded to it’s original spec of being allowed to be over 3500kg it would just be another paperwork exercise. Obviously I kept all the paperwork. It has an electric step that operates when the sliding door is opened. I took the fuse out of the box connecting this because it always seemed to find my shin when I was getting in to do something.
It is a good comfortable vehicle to drive. 6 gears. It has a limiter to 62mph (100kph). The mechanic said I could have had it removed but never bothered. It has a tachometer fitted from new so mileage is recorded on that in kilometers (see photo – 112000 km = about 70000 miles).
I’ve lived out of it for a few months whilst working away from home – I used a camp bed that folded into the luggage rack with bedding that I left set up & it was comfortable. I particular like that the rear seats are removable with 5 bolts & can be arranged anywhere. The luggage racks both sides & above the cab provide a lot of storage space easily filled with junk that really should be stored elsewhere – but ideal for living away. There is also a large storage area under the front passenger seats. I have inserts of silver backed foam insulation for all the windows – keeps it cooler in summer, warmer in winter. Rear windows open enough to get electric cables out for electrical hook up & provide ventilation without compromising security. Middle passenger seat folds down to be a little table. I rarely have it up.
It has a window in the room which is officially an emergency exit. I had a Halfords solar panel inside it connected to a leisure battery so I could charge phones etc when camping.
I bought a spare wheel – it didn’t come with one & there isn’t a space under the vehicle for one. The radio doesn’t work – I only use it to plug in as a speaker for my mp3 player. When I was buying it it had a fancy one & I asked them to swap it for a simple one for that purpose – I didn’t want it to be a target for thieves.
Boarding the rear area with a false floor could provide extra storage in the footwell space that could be under a carpet & otherwise unnoticed if living in van. It would be easy to convert this to a camper or vehicle for other leisure use.
I don’t work away during the summers anymore so feel I’m carrying around a lot of empty space unneccessarily.
As an all purpose large utility vehicle it is ideal, family holidays with everything taken along. I once went campiing & took a reclining armchair with me & carried into the ten man tents living area. It could easily be converted into a full time live in camper for those wanting to dog about on the highways, ideal for commune living or road trips for a team with kit – kayaks, paddle boards, motorbikes, bicycles. Working away on contract like I did also easy. It has a lot of possibilities.
