This is our 1982 Toyota Hiace camper (The Sunshine Bus).
It is an original Devon conversion, with pop-up roof. The pop-up roof makes a huge difference – room to get changed, make a cup of tea, etc. The roof includes a double bed, while downstairs the rear seats convert into another double bed. The interior is full-on 80s and has enough room to sleep four or carry the driver and four passengers (two front, three rear). The rear is fitted out with a kitchen, including gas fridge, cooker, sink and a number of cupboards. The cooker also swivels out, so that you can cook inside or out. Cooker and fridge run on propane.
In the tall cupboard, there is an inverter that runs off the leisure battery for small 240V power. The leisure battery needs to be replaced. I Will see if I have a battery that might be suitable.
The bus runs and drives – typical Toyota! While it is tax and MOT exempt, I had it MOT’d last year and have since had the head skimmed and replaced the rear brake shoes. While it starts, I have ordered a new starter motor, as the current one can take a couple of attempts.
The mileage is a little over 100,000, and it has delivered us to our holidays on a number of occasions, as well as acting as daily transport for a period.
